■授業の取組,工夫等について

1) Course Aims and Content

This course used the textbook Tell Me Your Stories by Bob Jones and David Coulson. The main aims of the class were to give students the confidence to tell stories in English and the ability to be a good listener during conversations

Each week students practiced useful phrases for telling and responding to others’ stories. The weekly homework assignment was to prepare a short story, which the students then practiced in class. Ultimately, the students were able to stand up in front of the whole class and tell their stories without notes. At the end of term there was a speaking test in which students told stories to each other in small groups for 10 minutes.

2) Course Philosophy

In English classes in Japan, an important job of teachers is to create a relaxed atmosphere in which students are not afraid to practice their English. Our students have much English ability, but it has mostly been directed to exam preparation. This course aimed to give students a chance to use and enjoy English. Speaking to the whole class (they can all do it if they try!) gives confidence; and laughing during class, and even the end of term test, was welcomed as a good sign of genuine communication.

3) Finally

While it is a great honour to be given a Hokkaido University Commendation for Excellent Teaching, ultimately this was mainly possible because I had excellent students. They were the ones who tried hard in class and, by doing so, enjoyed the course and benefited from it. As teachers, if we show belief in the abilities of our students, they will respond and flourish.
