On November 6, Dr. Nobuyoshi Kitaichi, an assistant professor at the Hokkaido University Hospital (ophthalmology), was awarded the APIISG's Excellent Contribution Young Investigator Award. The award ceremony was held in the combined meeting of the 2nd International Uveitis, 3rd Asia-Pacific Intraocular Inflammation, and 8th Chinese Ocular Immunology Symposium in Chongqing, China, and Dr. Kitaichi gave a commemorative lecture.

The Asia-Pacific Intraocular Inflammation Study Group (APIISG) is an international academic organization headquartered in Singapore that researches uveitis and other ocular inflammatory diseases. It sponsors a biennial academic conference attended by Japan, China, the United States, Australia, India, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea.

Dr. Kitaichi was selected as the first recipient of this newly established award in recognition of his outstanding achievements; he led one of the largest international epidemiological surveys on uveitis in patients with Behcet's disease with the involvement of 25 institutions from 14 countries and regions. The results of his research revealed that the prevalence of juvenile-onset Behcet's disease is extremely low in East Asia (including Japan) and South Asia, and the clinical characteristics differ with ethnicity and age of disease onset.
