On October 30, the undergraduate and graduate Economics department hosted the second annual reception for its international students enrolled for the 2009 school year. International student enrollment in graduate studies in the Division of Modern Economics and Management has increased annually, with international students accounting for nearly half of the department's master's students this year. Given the increasing international student enrollment in the Economics and Management programs, this year's reception was held to promote friendship and understanding among international and Japanese students and staff. It was also designed to help build relationships that would lead to the improvement of campus life for international students. The reception welcomed over 100 participants this year, including international students and their tutors and student supporters, as well as Japanese students interested in international exchanges, and involved university staff. The event was ably hosted by two students: an international student in the final year of his doctoral studies, and an undergraduate Japanese student with experience studying abroad. The two masters of ceremonies also led the event-goers in an entertaining quiz game about Hokkaido University. The reception was held in a friendly and casual atmosphere, during which time participants had the chance to hold interesting conversations over snacks and drinks, and get acquainted with their colleagues.
