On October 23, the Faculty of Education hosted the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission delegation on its visit to Japan and exchanged views on topics such as the present state of and problems of education in Japan and China and promoting international exchanges in the future. The meeting took place at the Faculty of Education. The eight members of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission delegation included Shen Xiaoming (Vice-Mayor of Shanghai), Li Jun Xiu (Deputy Director-General, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission), Wang Hong (Director, Lifelong Education Division, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission), Yang Weiren (Director, International Exchanges and Cooperation Division, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission) and Zhang Jin (Deputy Director, International Cooperation and Exchange Division, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission). Participating from the Faculty of Education were Prof. Shinichi Tokoro (Dean), Prof. Toru Onai (Vice- Dean), Prof. Yoichi Anezaki, Associate Prof. Toshiro Yokoi, and Assistant Prof. Shigeru Mitsumoto. The delegation members and those from the Faculty of Education discussed matters of mutual concern, asked questions, and exchanged views. The Chinese delegates were interested in the relationships between the standardization of educational content/curricula and the realities of school education as well as trends of teacher education reform in Japan. The representatives of the Faculty of Education focused on China's efforts to establish an educational model while learning from the experiences of other countries. After the meeting, the delegation visited a local elementary school, where a lively question-and-answer session took place with local teachers in response to interest shown by the delegates. They discussed matters ranging from earthquake-resistant structures and evacuation facilities and measures taken to prevent disasters and ensure safety to moral education and foreign-language activities, which will become compulsory in the new Course of Study for Elementary Schools in Japan. The visit is strongly expected to help promote education and research exchanges between the Faculty of Education and universities in Shanghai.
