ProSPER.Net General Assembly and the Board Meeting were held at Tongji University in Shanghai, China from 6 to 7 July. Hokkaido University, in addition to being elected as Board Member for two consecutive terms, assumed the position as Chair of the Board. ProSPER.Net, an academic alliance established in June 2008 with a strong initiative by Hokkaido University, stands for "The network for the Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research". It is a consortium of leading higher education institutions in Asia and the Pacific under the auspices of the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST), to bring about understanding and delivery of ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) and SD (Sustainable Development) at the postgraduate level. Member institutions involved have strong education and research programmes in SD and related fields. The launching ceremony was held here at Hokkaido University in June 2008. This new appointment was in recognition of Hokkaido University's active contribution as a Board Member during its first term from June 2008 to June 2010. Hokkaido University also acts as the lead institution among 5 other ProSPER.Net member institutions in "Alternative University Appraisal (AUA) Project", the flagship initiative of 9 joint undertakings, to create a learning community among universities in Asia-Pacific region that are engaging in ESD. The term of the new appointment as the Board Chair is 2 years from July 2010 to June 2012 and the duties include convening and overall management of the ProSPER.Net Board meetings/General Assemblies, consolidating all ProSPER.Net joint undertakings, and coordination with the secretariat etc. In a related development, Hokkaido University launched "Office of International Affairs" as of 1 July where a specialized team is committed to ProSPER.Net affairs including the above-mentioned "AUA Project". In its capacity as the Board Chair, HU expects to further strengthen the network of international collaboration. ProSPER.Net Member Institutions
