Hokkaido University, aspiring to promote its activities in
the fields of education, research and social contribution
as an internationally characteristic university, is engaged
in various activities: |
|
Activities: Four Major Activities to Promote Internationalization |
1. Reinforcement of Exchanges with Universities
Worldwide
Hokkaido University has concluded the 141 Exchange Agreements,
including the Departmental Exchange Agreements, thereby
widening the scope of exchanges of faculty members and
students.
We have, at the same time, been actively holding university-wide
bilateral symposiums with our parther universities, thereby
strengthening the cooperative activities with the limited
number of parthers.

2. Increase in the Number of International
Students
We have formulated the "Strategic Plan for International
Activities" and have been promoting exchanges with Northeast
Asia, particularly China, South Korea and Taiwan, in order
to increase the number of international students.
3. Strengthening International Public
Relations and Overseas Networks
We have published and widely distributed the Hokkaido
University introductory pamphlets in Chinese and Korean
versions in addition to English. The quarterly-published
English and Chinese Newsletter also introduce our most
recent activities in an easy-to-understand manner.
We have established Hokkaido University Beijing Office
in April 2006 to provide more information and services
to Chinese researchers and students, as well as to support
former international students in alumni associations'
activities.

Project for Establishment of Rapid Diagnostic Tools for Tuberculosis and
Trypanosomiasis and Screening of Candidate Compounds for Trypanosomiasis and
Improving Sustainable Water and Sanitation Systems in Sahel Region in
Africa. Also, we have accepted trainees in relation to the establishment

Hokkaido University Initiative for Sustainable Development
(HUISD) |
What did We Launch?
Aspiring to become a more international university, Hokkaido
University launched the new "Hokkaido University Initiative
for Sustainable Development (HUISD)" project in 2005.
The headquarters responsible for this project was established,
with the expectation of laying the foundation for HU's
internationalization policy to be fulfilled in five years'
time by March 2009.
What is HUISD for?
- *To make well known to the rest of the world the fact
that HU has practiced internationally competitive education
and research;
- *To make the university have a high affinity with
the international community and abound in diversity;
- *To make greater contributions to the international
community through the spread of academic results and
policy recommendations as well as the development of
international cooperation activities
How to Deal with Sustainable Development
We are to tackle the challenges facing the global society,
such as sustainable development. It is imperative that
the entire university should work effectively and cooperatively
by transcending disciplinary and organizational boundaries.
Based on this perspective, we set up the following three
challenges to be tackled intensively in an inter-disciplinary
manner:
Challenge 1:
Climate and Environmental Systems in Northeast Asia,Pan-Okhotsk
and North Pacific

Challenge 2: Zoonosis

Challenge 3: Sustainability Governance Project (SGP)

New Challenge: Promotion of International Collaboration in
Education |
Since 2008, Hokkaido University has worked to put in
place and firmly establish a comprehensive campus-wide
support structure for international collaboration in education
under a program by the Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology. We have surveyed the Erasmus
Mundus programme, which lays out the policy for educational
cooperation among European universities, the European
Credit Transfer System (ECTS), and educational partnerships
among domestic and overseas universities in order to clarify
points at issue and challenges related to our future double
degree program and credit transfer system as we seek solutions
to these issues.
