Educational projects concerned with policy issues that address society demands related to "Contributing to regional activation" are selected from proposals submitted by various councils and are given financial support. Our proposal prepared by the Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Graduate School of Letters, Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences, and Institute of Low Temperature Science entitled "Human Environmental Science in Northern Regions Education Program - Regional Activation through Environmental Science Education" and submitted to the "Modern Educational Needs Challenge Support Program" of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology was chosen.
In Hokkaido, which is blessed with a rich natural environment, there are 19 field-science educational research installations (including the Wakayama Research Forest) and a training ship. Both students and the general public use these facilities to learn about the region. A comprehensive science education program examining human environmental science in northern environments is now being conducted. There are three core programs:(1)The Northern Region Environmental Science Education Program,(2)""Shiretoko Science" Using the Museum as the Core" Education Program, and (3)"The Seeds for Developing New Marine Fisheries" Education Program focusing on southern Hokkaido. These programs aim at energizing the region by developing education related to the natural cultures, society and industries that are peculiar to the region. In the long-term view, Hokkaido is being developed as an educational resource for the people of Japan and as the basis for environmental and social education. The know-how that is being developed will be used for regional activation.
In the three programs, the motto "Go to the field!" is used as an education stimulus for both students and teachers, and aims at creating a new bilateral mechanism connected with regional activation. |
